About Jeff Cohen
After my brother suffered a debilitating automobile accident in 1978, we traveled to the Philippines to explore alternative therapies for his injury. There we discovered Hilot, a traditional, centuries-old healing practice that can dramatically improve conditions such as sprains, pulled muscles, and repetitive stress injury. For years I worked with an expert healer in a remote village where I learned many of the Hilot techniques that have become instrumental to my therapy practice. In subsequent trips, I studied with other master healers and developed an in-depth understanding of Hilot principles. Watch a short film of my experience in the Philippines. The principles found in Hilot are based on the unique relationship between blood vessels and nerves, the proprioceptive mechanism, and how the energetic systems (also found in traditional Chinese medicine) are accessed via the neurovascular bundle, the connective tissue housing blood vessels and nerves. Over my forty years of practicing massage therapy, I have developed a very specific form of soft tissue proprioceptive retraining, a treatment that vastly improves joint mobility, muscle performance and range of motion, after an injury. Many times an injury to soft tissue results in neuromotor dysfunction: pain, muscle spasm and inflammation. Inflammation, in turn, affects neighboring muscle groups, compromising the body’s ability to function normally. My treatment addresses both localized inflammation and reactive neurovascular dysfunction associated with underlying muscle, joint or tendon pain. I develop plans for my clients that include evaluation of the neuromotor dysfunction, targeted goals for treatment, and specific interventions to address their disability. Mark Morris – Mark Morris Dance Group "Since I joined the SF Ballet 17 years ago, Jeff has been helping the dancers not only recover from injury but educate us in injury prevention. He is the real deal." Damian Smith – San Francisco Ballet Principle Dancer "Jeff Cohen has a truly unique gift of healing. I have come to him with serious pain and immobility from numerous different muscle strains and other soft-tissue injuries that he was able to remedy in as little as one or two treatments. His vast practical knowledge, highly perceptive intuition, and extensive technique work together harmoniously to liberate the free flow of energy throughout the body, restore balance, and enable self-healing and relief. Additionally, his Nourishing Awareness workshops at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music were highly informative and inspiring, as he fostered healing and hope for those struggling with acute and chronic injuries, and new levels of body awareness for all to help prevent them. I am sincerely grateful to know Jeff and for all the work we have done together. Scott Pingel - Principal Bass, San Francisco Symphony Faculty, San Francisco Conservatory of Music |
